Paying the Mowers

This painting in 1882 received the honor of the Luxembourg, and for
the painter the decoration of the Legion of Honor. It is of the class
of great pictures of rural life, such as Millet's The Sower, The Gleaners,
and The Angelus; or, Rosa Bonheur's Plowing in Nivernais. This painting
earned the artist a Grand Medal of Honor at the Exposition of 1889 - the
highest distinction bestowed.
